With the likelihood of our international borders remaining closed for the remainder of the year, at least to much of the Northern Hemisphere anyway, we are introducing a brand new event that will bring together the top drifters from around Australasia in a door-banging, head-to-head, winner-takes-all, showdown!
Introducing… the 2022 Australasian Drift Titles presented by Garrett Advancing Motion!
WTAC 2022 will see a total revamp, and with time attack racing running into the night under the Sydney Motorsport Park lights, the ever-popular drift component of the day now heads to early afternoon prime time!
The 2022 Australasian Drift Titles will run the North Circuit course for a more integrated show, with fans being able to secure a spot on the hill early in the day for great vantage points of both drifting and time attack into the night.
“Drift has always been a huge part of the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge, right from our inception, and we will keep on carrying on this tradition to make it bigger and better every year,” says Superlap CEO Ian Baker.
“This is a prime opportunity to showcase the best drift drivers in Australasia, ensuring drift fans who make the annual pilgrimage are able to witness the latest and greatest in the sport.”
“We also welcome back Garrett Advancing Motion as our valued presenting partner who has been a long-term supporter of our event and the sport of drift.”
This year, the drifting competition will move back to a traditional Top 32 format, with Qualifying on the Friday and then Top 32 battles to the final on Saturday from just after lunch time. As this is an invite-only event, only the top drivers and the wildest cars get a look in to making up the field.
“I’m really excited to have WTAC 2022 back and running, and the interest has been overwhelming! We’ve had over 60 drivers from all around the country and across the ditch in NZ already making contact to enquire about the event,” says WTAC Drift Operations Manager Dan Mackie.
“The move back to SMSP’s North Circuit will bring back that amphitheatre atmosphere, and a closer connection to the whole event. I am also looking forward to the return to a traditional battle tree.”
“While it is a shame we can’t have drivers and cars from all over the globe, this is still going to be an exciting event with some of the best battles you will see on Australian soil.”
As always at this world famous event, there are quirky little differences that we look to put on to keep the punters interested and to be a little different to the rest, this year is no change to that mandate, with some fresh new faces to be added to the mix.
One such exciting addition in this year’s competition is a wildcard entry which we’ve awarded to the winner of last weekend’s Drift Masters Australia event at Queensland Raceway.
17-year-old Saxon Moyes has won the Pro-Am Competition and in turn has received an invite to this year’s Australasian Drift Titles, and becomes our first official announced driver of the competition!
“It’s great to see this young gun from the Gold Coast taking it to much more experienced drivers in the competition. He definitely shows great potential and we look forward to welcoming him to the world stage in October!” says Dan Mackie.
Official invites for the Australasian Drift Titles will come out towards the end of May and our confirmed field will be announced in June.
